Where It All Started

At the Blue Wave Martial Art Center we practice the style of Tae Kwon Do (Korean Karate) which emerged from the Chung Do Kwan in Seoul, Korea.  The Chung Do Kwon (translated means "Blue Wave Institute") enjoys the rich heritage of being the first Tae Kwon Do School ever established and is famous for the caliber of students and instructors that it has produced over the years and across the globe.  Characterized by impeccable technique and devastating power, the Chung Do Kwon students were long ago known for their intense training sessions and fierce determination even in the most challenging circumstances.  One of the earliest original students of the Chung Do Kwan, Yong Taek Chung, brought this amazing training format to the United States in 1974.  Teaching for many years in the Kansas City area, Grandmaster Chung introduced thousands to the art of Korean Karate.  Of those thousands, appoximately 50 reached Black Belt and of those 50 only 6 have achieved the level of Tae Kwon Do Master.  Our instructor here at Blue Wave, Master David Blevins, is a long time student and follower of Grandmaster Chung and one of the 6 American masters of the Chung Do system of Tae Kwon Do.  The movements and skills that we learn have been handed down over hundreds of years and sometimes thousands of years old.  The strategies that we employ are as applicable today as they were 2,000 years ago.  What a wonderful feeling it is to know that you never have to feel frightened again.  You are able to respond to emergencies and crisis situations with a feeling of confident energy.  You will learn that size doesn't matter when confronted by an attacker.  That age is not a limiting factor when learning the techniques of self protection.  You will be learning the art of ancient warriors.

Benefits of Martial Art Training

It is really amazing as you see your body go through changes that come with Tae Kwon Do training.  You will feel like you have a spring in your step.  Muscles that you never new existed will come to life and aid you in other sports and activities.  You will learn to understand the real idea behind "focus"  and apply it to other everyday life.  How great it is to feel less clumsy, be able to work longer, enjoy playing harder, and feel younger than ever before.

When you work all day or you are home with the kids all day it sometimes seems like your head is about to burst with all you have on your mind.  How about a 1 hour time-out from your day?  Tae Kwon Do training feels like you just got a good scrubbing on the inside.  The difference that a little relief from stress can make is amazing!  And, while the teaching is truly authentic, we rely on good old-fashioned hard work (nothing magical or mysterious) to achieve the gains we make.  Tae Kwon Do consists of many different types of movements, both aerobc and anaerobic, which are designed to provide a comprehensive workout.  These movements cooperate with normal physiology and psychology to help you lose extra pounds, strengthen muscles and tendons while improving your level of flexibility.  By beginning with simple motions and eventually learning complex techniques, you gain a better sense of balance and a feeling of coordination and body control.  The physical improvements go hand in hand with changes that you will feel inside.  After participating for even a short time in martial art classes it is normal to experience stronger feelings of self-discipline and confidence.  You will notice an overall sense of well-being and contentment.  Children almost always improve concentration and performance in

school while adults tend to become more assertive.  Lose weight, gain coordination, become more disciplined, learn self-defense... these are just a few of the reasons why Tae Kwon Do has lasted 2,000 years and has becomethe lifestyle choice for enthusiasts world-wide.

Self Defense

Protection starts with preparation.  First, you learn technique, then control, then speed, then power.  We will teach you how to punch correctly, how to kick, how to block and how to move.  We will show you proper breathing for explosive action.  The you learn the discipline that it takes to maintain your skill.  The benefit of all this Tae Kwon Do practice is a hard, sinewy body, keen awareness and piercing confidence.  It is easy to see why someone who looks self-assured would be a less likely target.  A body hardened by martial art training just looks imposing.  Properly learned, Tae Kwon Do is unsurpassed as a devastating means of self-protection and defense.
